SECRETS to finding the Ballards / Pottery Barn / Restoration Hardware looks on CRAIGSLIST!

Every single time I share photos of the cool items I find on Craigslist, many, many comments say things such as:

Triple Acanthus DiningBallards Macau Arm CHAIRS
$299.00 EACH
You are so lucky!
OR
Your craigslist always has the best deals!
OR
How do you find these deals?

Well, let me tell you one way I like to find awesome deals on Craiglist.

When I am leafing through the “Brick and Mortar” magazines and see really neat looks that are out of my budget, at the same time, I will search on Craigslist with the high priced magazine as my inspiration.

For example. Let’s use the above picture.
Bamboo is hot right nowand Ballards has the above bamboo chairs for $299.00 EACH!!!!

I love them but can’t afford them….but what about this option?
I used the search words, bamboo, rattan, or you could use “hollywood regency” or “chinese chippendale“.

Here is what I found quickly in our area.

Natural Bamboo Base with 3/4″ Glass Top (43″x73″)
6 Chairs
425.00 OBO ( I would offer $250.00….just so you know)

Ok…before you say….but I don’t need a table. OR….I don’t need SIX Chairs????

Seriously? Think outside of the box! If you were looking for two…then think about the fact that you are probably able to get this whole set for $250.00, when you make your offer. Donate the table or sell it. Then sell the extra chairs if you do not want them. Take a better picture, and I bet you make your money back and end up getting your chairs for “FREE”.

Winner winner chicken dinner!

Ok…..let’s get a little creative, shall we?

Howard Tufted Swivel Glider

                                                                                                   Ballards

Howard Tufted Swivel Glider
$749.00 – $1,205.00

Think outside of the boxand you can find this chair for almost free! Then you can get it re-covered OR do it yourself with so many neat tutorials out there.
Took less than one minute to find this chair for $30.00. I would offer $15.00 because it is stained and will definitely  need re-upholstering. Can you guess what search word popped up this chair and many others in the same price range?

Search word = “swivel”

Ok…..still don’t believe me ?

Restoration Hardware
It’s on sale!!!
But it’s still out of my budget
76′ Kensington Leather sofa $3395 – $4165 $2655 – $4165

Search word I used to just find one quickly to show you?
“Tufted”

So…..as I have said in my other “Craigslist Secrets” posts……
My area is not magic.

Get creative in your searches people!
Use the awesome high priced magazines as inspiration.

One more quick secret….
When you put your search word in the Craigslist search bar, do it on the main page. Not under a category.
Many times people post furniture in household, antiques, furniture, barter…..don’t limit yourself to one category.

Got it?
Clear as mud?
Can you use these tips?

Let me know.

  1. I use these tips too, and every now and then I’ll find a good match….but not often. I repurpose furniture as a business, and work with a team of furniture painters…..we all bemoan the fact that our craigslist is capital A awful. In our area, there are no pottery barns, ballards or specialty stores. Our town is tightwad city, and basically has no style whatsoever. Scrolling thru craigslist is an exercise in nausea-control. Items I paint, I sell for hundreds less in our area than they would just a couple hours away. People here (even those with money) don’t get the painted furniture craze. So….sometimes, in some areas of the US, there just ain’t good pickin’s on ole craigslist, and those of us who try to sell there either can’t or end up losing money because people refuse to pay for good work.

  3. Jaybird says:

Cindy said it all……our town is like that as well!! People don’t get rid of anything around here, until it is completely destroyed or dead, and then they want top price!! However, I have had two beautiful small parson’s chairs on Craigslist for several weeks, but they don’t sell either……
    bah-humbug…..
Have a good week and blessings to you,
    J
