Dining Room and Simplicity…..

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas!

We did.

It was probably one of our most stress free…..slower paced, and…….simpler (is that a word?) Christmases that we have had.

Simpler…..(IS it a word?)

And in keeping with simpler (???) times, I wanted to share with you ….

NOTHING BIG.

You’re welcome.

Get it?

Simpler times = Nothing big……

HOO HOO…HEE HEE….HA Ha ha….

Tell me you haven’t missed those knee slapping one liners!

Anyone?

Hello?

~tap tap~

Moving on…….

Many of you have asked about where my dining room transformation stands.

It has only been about three years since I first started the changes, people.

That’s like a week in YouAreTalkingTooMuch time.

Why ya‘ rushing me?

; )

And it still isn’t where I really want it.

But I thought I would do a SIMPLE post and just catch ya‘ up a bit.

Here is one before photo, to remind you where we started…and before you all start freaking out….remember I have a two other brick fireplaces, so it wasn’t a HIDEOUS event that I painted this one white….AND…this table was so big, that the diners against the fireplace could burst in flames if they were wearing polyester. PLUS…..you couldn’t get around the ends of the tables without the end diners getting up.

Can you tell I worry about what you all think?

Ok. Before……

dining room 31

It needed changes….for realz.

Major needs: I needed seating for our large extended family, but space to be able to move around in the room at the same time.

Solution number one. Gaining seating but still keeping space to move around.

HOW?

Round table gives us more space in the room and TWO thrift store “leaves” with my round breakfast table give us more seating. Sits up to 8 easily!

The round table suggestion was from many of my readers, and I listened.

Using the table I already had worked but I didn’t have any leaves…so I hit up the thrift stores. Two leaves, that were adjusted a bit, work perfect with a table cloth to hide the differences.

So, with one leaf, the table sits 6, I have another leaf, and it will sit 8 but that seating doesn’t stop there!

The drop leaf table  serves as a “buffet” style table against the wall but makes an awesome extra table which we used for up to six kids this Thanksgiving.

No lie. 14 people can now sit in this room if the blue velvet chairs are out , we adjust where the tables are…and it works..

FOURTEEN diners.

Not crammed….and it looked and felt good.

Christmas 2013 2

I even take out the leaves at times and use the velvet (Craigslist) chairs as seating at opposite ends of the table.

Just for a change….

and because I’m crazy like that.

And what did I do in my breakfast room when I took out my table and used it here?

My family is so used to changes, it’s pitiful. I think this way will stick for a bit!

Can you believe those chairs were free? NASTY and from a restaurant that was re-decorating.

I found that awesome navy and off white animal print fabric and had the cushions re-upholstered and scrubbed down the chairs myself.

It was the first time I have ever PAID to have a piece recovered.

BUT, I love them and know that I could not have done such a fabulous job.

Plus, paying to have them reupholstered is one way to make me stick with this change for a bit.

A bit…….

Here is a reminder before “shot” in my breakfast room.

Your heads spinning yet?

If I wasn’t keeping this post so simple, I would take more time to tell you about the EIGHT Restoration Hardware chairs and Wisteria mirror coming from Craigslist and only costing around 100.00 TOTAL

WE HAVE SO MUCH TO CATCH UP ON!

But we have a whole new year to do it in.

: )

I love it so far!! It looks so comfy and cozy. And from what you say, very versatile now. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since this all started. Wow, where did the time go? Anyway, great job!!

  2. I sure have missed you Craigslist queen! Love your wit and am so happy to “hear” from you again <3

  3. your home always feels so warm and cozy and comfortable. Love your before and afters but I do love that fireplace painted white and the fabric on those chairs. perfect! Happy New Year.

Rebecca ~~ Love your transformations! I’m a mover/rearranger too, although I don’t know if my family ever got totally USED to my ‘activities’ over the past years! My home now is large in square footage, but have little wall space, and I’m completely limited on rearranging. THAT frustrates me and I don’t like it at all! The fireplace painted white is stunning, the room is beautiful. Love you breakfast nook arrangement as well, the table and the chairs with the newly reupholstered cushions are lovely! What have you done now with the rectangular dining table? GOOD JOB girl!!! Thanks for sharing the pix. You have inspired me to bring an old white/antiqued mantel surround out from the back bedroom and put it in my dining room, which is not used as a “dining room”, but I know the mantel surround will look beautiful in it!

  5. Connie McCallum says:

So glad to hear from you again. Your rooms are looking lovely. Looking forward to hearing all about them in the new year. Happy New Year to you and yours.

  6. Mary Ann says:

I liked the white dining table and chairs better than the rattan. I like the rattan chairs, but not for inside, I think they would be better around a table on the porch or patio.

I think you were very wise to go to the round table in the dining room!

  7. Love the changes and the white fireplace is wonderful. Happy New Year, Ginger

  8. Janet says:

I have missed your posts!! You’ve done wonders with those rooms. Simple is beautiful done right, and you done right..

  9. Everything is so pretty! It’s fun to look at things in a new way and have it turn out great, isn’t it?

  10. Jaybird says:

Been missin’ you!!! I think it all looks great! I ‘m married to the big bad wolf, so I can’t change things around too often…..however, that doesn’t stop me from making new curtains, pillows, tablecloths and chair cushion covers at the drop of a hat :^)……………AND, I got Joann and Hobby Lobby gift cards for Christmas…whoo-hoo!!
Blessings to you in this shiny new year,
    J
