Cheap alternative to Gold Leaf or Rub n Buff

Have you ever used gold leaf paint or rub n buff gold paint? I love it but at $8.00 a bottle I wanted a cheaper alternative for those projects that take a lot of gold leaf or rub n buff.

I think I found it.

It goes on shiny.

And stays shiny.

Gold leaf paint runs around $8.00 a bottle but this substitute runs less than $3.00.

That’s less than half.

Just so you know.

Want to see what paint I am talking about?

You can find this paint in the craft paint section at Michaels. I’m sure that is the same for other craft stores as well. It is the Plaid paint and “Metallic Gold”.

What do you think? Close? Same to gold leaf or rub n buff?

Here are a few other projects that I used the higher priced gold leaf with so you can compare. You can click on the photos to visit the post and see their transformations.

Did I feel the need to prove to you that I had used it before?

Apparently….

So, what do you think?

Affordable alternative?

I kept it on in a more solid state and did not distress as much off in this project as I wanted the sleigh to have the shiny gold accent.

By the way, since you didn’t ask……

I picked this sleigh up at a thrift store.

Is that a neat find or what?

They also had a brown wicker one that I picked up as well.

Double score!

So, do you like this substitute for gold leaf paint?

Have you ever played around with gold leaf or rub n buff but didn’t like the price?

Let me know!

I can’t wait to hear from you!

Love,

Me

That looks like good stuff. I have never used it:) Very pretty though.

  2. guess I,ve always been thrifty.

i used this back in my girl scout leader days

  3. I’ve only ever used silver rub n’ buff, but it is extremely watery. Is that normal?

  4. I have never used rub ‘n buff, and at that price, it is unlikely I ever will! But I have wanted to achieve that effect. Now I know how! Thanks for sharing.

  5. Love it all! I’ll be getting some Metallic Gold when I hit the craft store, for sure. Wish I could be so sure I could find a sleigh.. Maybe if I can get to our ReStore’s holiday sale event?

What is the protocol for sharing a picture from your blog? I have a blog I share with my family members. I have been attempting to paint a couple of pieces of furniture using the Super Flat Valspar paint from Lowes that you used on 3 different pieces of furniture and shared in a much earlier post. I wanted to share one of your pictures in my explanation of how I decided to attempt this type of paint, and painting. If I put the name of your blog (which is already imprinted onto your photos) is it acceptable to share your photo? I don’t want to do anything I shouldn’t. Thanks! By the way…using the gold craft paint is a good idea!!!
