Foot stool

With grand babies and nieces and nephews as regular visitors, a footstool like this is just what our home needed.

But it didn’t start like this.

It started almost exactly like the one below.

Two-Step Stool - White.Opens in a new window

It was literally brand new and still had the $39.99 sticker on it from Target. We paid $1.00 for it from a yard sale!

SCORE!

I wanted a stool where little hands could reach the sink in our downstairs bathroom and knew this would be perfect.

I used chalk paint on this project for the blue and the black.

I wanted to take a picture of the first step in distressing it after I painted it.

Because when I start distressing the blue, it ALWAYS freaks me out. At first it is like I’m just scratching the paint up. See how it looks? You just need to keep sanding lightly and eventually the scratchy look goes away and a more subtle distressing starts to show.

See?

Because this is going to be a “well” worn piece I wanted to use my Minwax paste to make sure that it was protected from drippy hands or dirty shoes.

Here is another photo to make sure you see how the paste deepens the color that you painted and distressed…….

Big difference isn’t it? (Just a note….don’t paste or wax the chalkboard that you want to write on. You will not be able to write on it with regular chalk if you do….not that I would have done that)

The paste step is my favorite.
I LOVE applying it. It gives EVERY piece the “showroom” feel and look.
A real finished look.
Minwax paste is my favorite.

I keep trying others but this minwax is SO easy to use that I keep coming back to it over and over.

This stool transformation was a fun and easy project.

About 20 minutes from start to finish……..AND………….

Wah lah!

A personalized chalkboard step stool.

I debated letting the kids write their own names but some of our nieces and nephews are out of state and I did not want them coming to our home and their name to not be on the stool.

Then I contemplated running the names around the edges of the step, like a border, but we have new names coming……

So, random placement won.

Which ended up being exactly what I wanted. (sorry for the lighting in this bathroom!)

Pretty good deal for a $1.00, don’t you think?

Do you keep a stool for grand babies, children, nieces or nephews?

Like?

I can easily paint over the black if the random, hand written text gets on my nerves.
And it may…….I’m still not sure about the placement.

What do you think?

  6. Stepstools are a must. My granddaughter is a little over 2 and she has to be doing anything I am doing in the kitchen. She always says ” I a big helper Mama ” . I love that. Mine was also a find ( free but nasty) I spray painted mine lime green . I’m sure it will get a makeover sometime but right now , I’m loving the punch of color in the kitchen.

  13. You did get a steal! I do keep a step stool for myself, my cabinets go up really high and I can’t reach the top. But no the only other person in our house is our Bo, he’s having a hard time getting up to the bed. I love how you did the chalkpaint, it really is cute. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday’s Best Par.tay!
